چکیده

The involvement of emotion in lexical processing has gained substantial attention, with many studies showing differential processing of words with negative emotional content. It is unknown, however, whether these interactions are restricted to conscious perception, or extend to preconscious processing as well. Here we examine the role of emotional content on preconscious face and word processing, taking advantage of interocular suppression to render a stimulus invisible for a short duration, and using an orthogonal spatial task (location discrimination) to identify the time at which a stimulus emerges from visual suppression. Crucially, consistent patterns were observed for emotional content across modality: negative stimuli (angry faces and negative words) took longer to emerge than positively valenced stimuli (happy faces and positive words). We discuss how differences in task demands can produce apparently incompatible patterns of results, and show how these different results can be reconciled within attentional accounts of negativity bias.

Eye contact captures attention and receives prioritized visual processing. Here we asked whether eye contact might be processed outside conscious awareness. Faces with direct and averted gaze were rendered invisible using interocular suppression. In two experiments we found that faces with direct gaze overcame such suppression more rapidly than faces with averted gaze. Control experiments ruled...

Running head: EYE GAZE ADAPTATION Eye gaze adaptation under interocular suppression

The perception of eye gaze is central to social interaction in that it provides information about another person’s goals, intentions, and focus of attention. Direction of gaze has been found to reflexively shift the observer’s attention in the corresponding direction, and prolonged exposure to averted eye gaze adapts the visual system, biasing perception of subsequent gaze in the direction oppo...

Stimulus Dependence in Mirror Neuron Systems

This study examined how stimuli content (emotionally expressive face and body images) influenced the location of mirror neuron activity as indexed by EEG mu-wave suppression. Participants completed an emotion-identification task in which they viewed black and white images of bodies and faces and identified them as displaying either fear or anger while their brain activity was recorded with EEG....

Accessing the meaning of invisible words.

Previous research has shown implicit semantic processing of faces or pictures, but whether symbolic carriers such as words can be processed this way remains controversial. Here we examine this issue by adopting the continuous flash suppression paradigm to ensure that the processing undergone is indeed unconscious without the involvement of partial awareness. Negative or neutral words projected ...
